This job down in Roseville in early June was a real chance to show off some of our hedge cutting and pruning skills, with a good volume of work required on some large and expansive Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Leighton Greens’ specimens surrounding the house and pool. The height was reduced on the first of the two large hedges on the left side of the house and all surplus growth on the faces and edges were cut back to form a neat, smooth and compact finish. Similar work was carried out on the right side of the house with an identical species also trimmed on the front face and top, as well as a tidy-up of the skirt and underneath at the very base of the hedge. When pruning hedges, large hedges in particular, a gentle taper is usually recommended from the top to allow for light to reach the bottom sections, i.e. narrower at the top, wider at the base, something that can be quite tricky to achieve while maintaining aesthetics. Regular trimming is often required on fast-growing species such as these Cupressocyparis leylandii, but with quality hedge-cutting work, there’s no finer canvas on which to achieve a crisp ‘magazine worthy’ finish. In addition to the hedges, a Camellia sasanqua was also given a makeover for practical purposes, with its branches brought back to a suitable distance from the house while maintaining its visual appeal. A beautiful overall result was achieved on the day and a fine example of quality hedge cutting work on large hedges that often requires a degree of skill to achieve the desired finish.
