What You’ll Learn About August Garden Jobs
- Why August is prime time for winter clean-up and pruning before spring growth kicks in
- Which jobs to prioritise this month: hedges, deciduous trees, lawns, citrus and hard surfaces
- How to tell when a winter “job” is actually a job for a professional arborist
With spring just a few short weeks away there is an air of anticipation and excitement in the garden – not just from the legion of gardeners everywhere but from the trees and shrubs themselves. There’s already a bit of a show from the camellias and some early bulbs, but it won’t be too long before the ‘go’ button is pressed and your garden explodes from its winter slumber. Of course, that metaphorical button is not locked in to any particular day and with the cold weather still nibbling away at us, it’ll be a little while yet before the shorts and t-shirts take pride of place at the front of the drawer or wardrobe.
This time of the year is invariably a favourite for most, if not all, gardeners. The thought of a new growing season, those first lime-green signs of new leaves unfurling, the clean canvas (dirt) for new seasonal plantings for which now is the perfect time to plan for. That heady scent as you walk into the nursery or garden centre for the first time post-winter, a list in your hand of the wants and needs for your garden this spring. Or, for those not quite so organised, a trolley and a plan to purchase anything that catches your eye as you swagger down the rows between the low beds oozing with new life and colour – not to mention the blue bum buzzing between the early spring flowers.
There’s Still Beauty in a Winter Garden
But maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, as we do have a small chunk of winter to go and perhaps I do it a disservice by wishing it to end prematurely. Winter certainly has a place on the garden calendar, a fresh beauty all of its own and a time to reset and reflect on the garden as a whole. You get to see the bones of your garden in winter and that can be a useful thing for planning ahead, redesigning garden areas and outdoor ‘rooms’ and most notably for managing its ongoing health and vitality.
August Jobs to Tackle Before Spring Arrives
So, now that I’ve waxed lyrical about the beauty of the spring to come and made my apologies to the winter garden, there’s just enough time for you to get out there and clean up those fallen leaves, prune back that spent growth, deal with any dead, dying or diseased branches and maybe take the pressure washer to your deck, paving, paths and other hard surfaces clinging to winter moss and other slimy stuff.
Jobs to do now:
- Cut hedges now
- Re-pot container plants
- Aerate lawns
- Feed and prune citrus
