With another spring now behind us, we can look forward to the warmth of summer and the festivities of the holiday period. In reflection, spring this year has actually been one of the better ones for a while. The days of extreme heat were few and there seemed to be a good mix of nice temperate weather, a decent amount of rain and what amounted to near perfect growing conditions in the garden. The first week of summer, however, has been a not-so-gentle reminder of just what type of heat awaits us over the next few months and a prompt perhaps to get the garden prepared.
Your garden should be humming with plenty of life and growth at the moment and with the help of the soaking spring rains your soil shouldn’t be too parched, especially if you’ve managed to add some organic matter to your beds and mulched them tenaciously. The summer heat will soon test everything, so make sure your beds are ready to hold moisture and that your soil in particular is in good health. A healthy soil will provide everything your trees and shrubs need to last them through the upcoming summer months.
A boost of fertiliser now and regular watering, if the rain is scarce, should be at the top of your garden priorities list. Pruning away any spent spring flowers and giving hedges a good clip before the middle of summer is something you could also be doing now, meaning everything is neat and tidy come Christmas. Lawns will still be rampant and regular cutting is a must but, as the summer heat continues to rise, leave your lawns a bit longer in the leaf to protect the roots from the blazing sun.
Early December is a great time to get the garden in order for a number of reasons, but chief amongst them is to make your and your garden’s life easier. With the upcoming festive season not too far away, a bit of hard work now will benefit your garden in the long run and it’ll mean you can sit beneath a shady tree with an icy cold drink on a hot summer’s day and admire yours or someone else’s hard work.
