The arrival of August brings with it a certain amount of excitement among gardeners everywhere because it signals that winter is almost over and spring is not too far away. Spring of course being the highlight on the garden calendar for most green thumbs keen to get outside and fill their gardens with all kinds of new plantings.
As the weather warms, the peak planting season for most trees and shrubs also happens to be the peak growing season for most species you might already have in your garden. August is a good month to give everything in your garden a good feed in anticipation of the surge in new growth once spring arrives. Feeding everything early will mean it’s readily available to your plants as soon as they need it to support all that growing they’re about to do.
If your garden feels like it’s a bit of a mess at the moment then you’re certainly not alone. Now is the perfect time to get things in order so you can start the spring with a relatively clean slate to work from. Clear away any fallen leaves, give the lawn a bit of care and prune back anything dead or dying. With any dead trees you might have on your property, removal is usually the recommended course of action, but some varieties might be suitable for hollowing out for bird and animal housing once they are taken down to a safe height.
Happy gardening as we countdown the days until spring!
