At the halfway point of winter and there’s been no real surprises in the garden, apart from perhaps the excess of rain which has left lawns everywhere squelching underfoot no matter the drainage beneath. Unraked leaves have probably formed a soggy mat on your driveways or well-intentioned piles have been left suppurating at various points around the garden. But what’s this? Some sunshine has broken through and shed some light on all the garden jobs that can be done at this time of year. Do we dare get the jump on the spring and summer ahead? Only if the good weather holds, of course!
One job that can be done in July regardless of the weather is a garden plan of some kind. That plan could be a list of the jobs that need doing over the next month or two – things like pruning trees and shrubs, cleaning pathways, decking and outdoor furniture, winter weeding of lawns or fixing any drainage issues you may have around the garden. Who knows, your plan might even be a total revamp of the entire garden – a new entertaining area, some new paving or decking etc. Regardless of what it may be, now is the time to sit down and plan it out.
Of course, there’s also the much more enjoyable stuff to be done outside, like the planting of new bare-root trees and shrubs in the garden or getting your beds juiced up on compost and manures for when the spring planting season arrives. But, whilst there’s still plenty of winter left to go, it’ll move quickly and spring will surely be here before you know it. Even a (dare-I-say-it) lackadaisical approach to the next six weeks will assist you come spring. You know what they say, every little bit helps!
