As of the 1st June 2004 the Council of the City of Sydney has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) covering any tree equal to or exceeding 5m in height or with a trunk circumference of 300mm (for single trunk species) or 100mm (for multi-trunk species) measured at 1m from ground level. Written consent from council is needed for removal unless a tree can be demonstrated to council it is either dead, dying or dangerous.
General Notes on Councils:
The pruning or removal of any trees on public land, parks, bushland or Heritage Items need special permission from ALL councils.
The Noxious Weeds Act 1993 lists trees not requiring permission to remove.
